About

The Digital Analogue Exchange (D.A.E.) is a key component to www.rosiearmistead.ca This is the place where anyone can contribute to the work that I do. My goal is to bring together art makers, computer savvy types and myself to create and document works of art. All works created in the D.A.E. will be exhibited in the exhibition space. The D.A.E. works on a principal of exchanging work for work. For a list of current projects please go to the Projects List.

History

I, Rosie Armistead, am not computer savvy. Indeed I am barely computer literate half the time. I tried to make a blog once- and while I did get some nice feedback from friends on it; I spent many frustrating hours begging the computer to please make the internet do what I wanted it to do. Neither the internet nor my computer seemed to care that I did not have the gumption (or time) to drop everything to learn how to work with them. It’s not that I’m opposed to learning (as a teacher who supports elective education that would be ridiculous!) it’s just that I knew that there are other people who already knew how to do the things that I do not. I also had heard many a rumour that there are people who actually ENJOY the whole computer thing. So rather than abandoning all hope and running away from the internet as fast as I could (it’s hard to get away from, and I don’t run that fast) I decided to play to my strengths and turn the idea of my own personal website into a collaborative art project. So after much dilly dallying , sketching, and day dreaming I hired myself a web site designer who was excited about creating a website as an extension of my art work.

I began schlepping paper samples, sketches, and all matter of non-digital type objects to the offices of David Ma of Xhift media, explaining how I have come to understand the whole internet thing. I think of it like a giant library with each different website being like a book therein or a giant magic filing cabinet where the file folders can hold billions of sheets of paper. Very scientific. Through David’s patience and enthusiasm, we managed to turn my collection of drawings, prints, and vague gestures into this beautiful shiny new handmade book… I mean website. (Which I hope you enjoy as much as I do!)

WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!

I need you!!!!

The whole point of making a website was to connect with people, and here is where the D.A.E. comes in. Besides all the years of backlogged art that I have made, I am still very active as a visual artist. So I propose a work exchange of sorts. You can help me out in a number of ways such as snapping some photos and scanning some stuff (or as I like to call it photo-documenting, it’s a nice long word). I also love working with other artist and am totally excited to see where collaboration can lead. I have some ideas of thing I think would be cool to do (see the projects list for this week’s specials) and am always open to suggestions for new projects.

Not to be one to expect something for nothing, what I am asking is that you be willing to do exchange a skill of yours for a skill of mine. I have compiled a list both of things that I have to offer AND things that I have little to no chance of doing unless someone more skilled than I helps me out. Any new art work that results from these collaborations will be featured in The Gallery, and I am working towards an analogue exhibition (a real art show, maybe even in a real gallery!)

I would love to include you in the D.A.E.
